4 Ways to Teach Your Child Forgiveness Daily

By: Dana Hall McCain

Forgiveness is a hard virtue to teach. It requires that we lay down our right to be angry over an offense committed against us—a tough sell in a world where we’re encouraged to “look out for number one.” But there’s one sense in which choosing forgiveness is looking out for number one: it gives you a chance to be happy, and to release the burden of those hard feelings you’re carrying around.

As a mom, this is one of the major reasons you should want your children to be forgiving people! Bottom line: those who know how to forgive and move on are happier people with better relationships. Here are some ways you can model this important life lesson for your children in everyday circumstances.

1. Show forgiveness to your children. Sometimes our kids’ behavior doesn’t just break a rule, it breaks our hearts (or makes us mad as a hornet). Of course, we have the responsibility in all circumstances to address and correct the behavior, and to enact disciplinary measures when needed. But your child knows the difference between discipline given in anger and discipline given in an effort to help them. If you are still angry or hurt with your child, take some time before you engage with them about consequences. If they are aware of your anger or frustration, proactively offer your forgiveness before you proceed with correction. Even if they don’t seem to understand that they need your forgiveness, offer it anyway. One day they will.

2. Model forgiveness in your marriage. Your children have a front-row seat to the lengthy play that is your marriage. They see the miscommunication, the milk dad agreed to pick up and forgot, the laundry you promised to make time for and never got around to. And they are watching to see how each of you reacts when the other makes a mistake. In every one of these instances—and certainly in the bigger marriage crises—you have a choice. Each time you choose to forgive your spouse and work together to move forward, you’re teaching your children a priceless lesson.

3. Practice forgiveness in community and school relationships. That teacher or coach who dropped the ball and upset your child? Forgive them. Especially if it was an isolated incident. (Ex: “I know Coach Nelson embarrassed you today, but that’s not like him. Maybe he was just having a bad day. Let’s forgive him, and move on. If it happens again, we can talk to him about it.”) The church staff member or committee member who hurt your feelings or ruffled your feathers? Same thing. Your kids hear you talk about these things, and are more aware of the small dramas in your life than you probably know. Handle them in a way that you’d want them to emulate.

4. Show forgiveness in extended family relationships. Some of the longest-standing grudges in world history are held by members of the same family. If your parents divorced and your childhood was rocky, you may still be dragging around the baggage. Your prior failed marriage may have left you with hurts that you’ve never laid down. For your own sake, and for the benefit of your kids, call it quits on being angry and let it go. You’ll be glad you did.

Cheesy Garlic Bread

Hasselback Garlic Cheesy Bread Recipe

Mixing some popular dishes can result into a disaster. But, some rare times, experimenting with some dishes and combining them into a marvelous piece of cookery, you will be both loved (by the lucky guest on your table) and hated (by the home chefs who didn't manage to come up with these delights by themselves). Take a risk and try to make this garlic cheesy bread.

 You will need:
warm water;
honey;
dry yeast;
bread flour;
salt;
olive oil;
plastic wrap;
whatever type of cheese you prefer;
half of cup of garlic butter;
You start by making the dough of this soon-to-be delicious bread. Take one envelope of dry yeast and mix it in a bowl with a tablespoon of honey and a cup of warm water. Add three cups of bread flour and a teaspoon of salt, and continue the mixing process until your dough does no longer stick to the bowl. Pour a little bit of the olive oil on the edges of the bowl where your mixture is. Leave it to rise for an hour in a towel covered bowl. After this, remove the dough from the bowl. Cut into two same-size parts and shape into a pair of baguettes. Don't be afraid to twist the dough as it will look interesting after you're done; it's useful for the other ingredients as well.
Now, while you leave the dough covered with a plastic wrap in a warm place, preheat your oven to 400" Fahrenheit. When half an hour has passed, take off the wrap and put in the oven for 20 minutes or so at 350". Meanwhile, slice the cheese into slices (they should be very thin!) and slowly melt half a cup of garlic butter. With the help of a kitchen brush, cover the entire bread (remove from oven to work with it better) with butter. Put to bake for another 10 minutes or until the bread reaches a tasty golden brown aspect. Let it cool for 15 minutes and then make slices with a knife through the bread. Make sure you don't cut all the way to the bottom. Use these spaces to put in the cheese and some more garlic butter. Place in the oven a bit for the cheese to melt. They're ready to serve. Delicious!

No Yard? No Problem: 5 DIY Garden Projects For People Who Don’t Have Space For A Garden

small-flowers-apartment-balcony-garden-ideasGardening can be such a rewarding hobby for you, your family, your neighbours and some friends as well as there is much to benefit from. Aside from being rewarding for your mind and soul, it is also physically rewarding because you actually get to harvest the “fruits of your labor.”
Being able to grow your own food means that you have COMPLETE control over what you are putting into you and your family’s bodies. You get to pick the seeds, the soil and the water that is being used to grow your fruits and veggies. That means completely organic, GMO free, fresh food could be right at your fingertips!
44317_500731113330236_2083194861_nThe majority of the produce in your local grocery store has travelled for a long time to get from where it was harvested to your grocery store and then eventually, your kitchen table. Did you know that fresh fruits and vegetables lose many of their nutrients during this travelling process? Not to mention all of the resources that it takes for this food to actually travel to you.
To be able to grow even some of your own fresh fruits and vegetables ensures that you are getting quality, wholesome, nutrient rich food, and you are doing your part for the environment as well.
Now imagine if everyone adopted some of these simple gardening practices, how amazing would that be? This not only brings us one step closer to becoming self-sufficient, but it also will majorly cut down all of the emissions from the big trucks and planes that are transporting this produce. So here are 5 simple gardening projects for people who don’t have a garden!

1. Plant What You Can Indoors

mason-jarGreat news, if you have windows, you can grow things! Certain varieties of tomatoes can be grown very well indoors and even in the winter, simply plant in a hanging basket and hang in front of a window that gets a lot of sunlight. You can also start a mini a herb garden by your window or by planting herbs in small containers. You can also attach mason jars to pieces of plywood and fasten them to the wall to start growing the herbs in the jars like shown in the picture to the left, just make sure that this wall gets enough sunlight.

2. Use Pallets Or Start A Vertical Garden

A pallet can be a great tool to use to grow herbs and even lettuce on your balcony during the warmer months, and a great way to recycle old pallets as well. They are relatively easy to find and can sit neatly against the wall on your balcony or patio. For instructions on how to make a pallet garden, click here. Shoe organizers that are often used in closets can also be a great tool for vertical gardening and growing plants as well.

3. Use Pots & Containers

There are many different types of veggies that can be grown in a container on a balcony, porch, or even on a small patch of grass if you are renting a property and are not allowed to put in a garden. (Like me!) Some of these veggies include: broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, eggplants, tomatoes, spinach, squash, peppers, and so on. To learn about proper planting techniques and which size containers to use for each type of vegetable, click here.

4. Utilize Windowsills & Ledges

5. Start Or Find A Community Garden

If none of these ideas are feasible for you, or you just want to do more, but don’t have the space, you should consider finding a local community garden or perhaps sharing a friend or neighbours garden. Many communities have community garden plots that allow you to grow whatever you like in a space that is provided for you. This can be a great way to garden because each member can grow specific vegetables and then trade with each other at harvest time. This can come in handy when certain veggies and herbs are ready, but others are not yet ready to be harvested. All this and you get to meet local like-minded people at the same time.
In this day and age being able to have your own garden and harvest your own vegetables is extremely important for your health. It is a way to take matters into your own hands and start being a little bit less dependent on the grocery stores. Don’t forget that: “In our society, growing your food yourself has become the most radical of acts. It is truly the only effective protest, one that can and will overturn the powers that be.  By the process of working directly in harmony with nature, we do the one thing most essential to change the world, we change ourselves.” gardeningRadicalActOfProtest-425x600
